Funding pressures force reductions in Gaza food assistance
Monthly food-aid coverage would fall from about 1.6 million people to 1.1 million, a reduction of roughly 31%.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said a funding shortage would reduce monthly food-aid coverage in Gaza from roughly 1.6 million people to 1.1 million. That is about 500,000 fewer intended recipients, a decline of roughly 31% from the previous coverage figure; actual deliveries must still be checked.
The number is not the whole story.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) reports monthly food-assistance recipients, a measure of people scheduled to receive support. Recipient counts do not automatically measure whether all planned food reaches each household.
Reuters reported that assistance in Gaza would fall from about 1.6 million monthly recipients to 1.1 million, a reduction of around 500,000 people, or roughly 31% of the earlier recipient total. These are planned aid coverage figures, not a measurement of meals consumed.
The key outcome is whether funding and safe access permit assistance to be restored, and how many people actually receive supplies. Reducing reported recipient coverage does not prove that every affected person has the same immediate access to alternatives.

What came before?
A July 23, 2026 UN/WFP assessment said approximately 1.4 million people in Gaza faced crisis-level or worse food insecurity, though food access had improved from late 2025. Before the October funding cuts, WFP said it was assisting around 1.6 million people per month. These figures describe different measures: need and aid coverage.
What is reported?
On October 19, 2026, WFP said it was reducing food assistance in Gaza by roughly one-third and that about half a million people would lose access to critical assistance.
